The Clubhouse -
Reopens After Devastating Fire
Sanford,
NC--Tobacco Road got an early Christmas
present in mid-December 1999: a spanking
new clubhouse to replace the original
clubhouse that was destroyed by fire. The
old clubhouse, a classic structure that
recreated a typical tobacco farm home, had
been in service only five months when it
went up in flames on April 29, 1999.
Investigators said an electrical shortage in
the crawl space underneath the building was
the cause of the devastating fire. "We were
heartbroken at the loss of a new and
serviceable building," said Tobacco Road
Golf Director Joe Gay. "The building and
design of the golf course were unique and
created an intriguing mystique that players
fully appreciated." For the next eight
months, Gay and his staff operated out of a
250-square foot room in the cart storage
building. "But it was business as usual,
and we never missed a tee time," Gay said.
Work on the new clubhouse began within weeks
of the fire. The new facility has the same
farmhouse style and character of the
original structure, but it is more than a
thousand square feet larger due to space
needs.
The 4100-square foot building, which
overlooks the tough 18th hole, houses the
pro shop, snack bar, administrative offices,
lounge and restrooms. For added safety, it
was built on a concrete slab. "We are
delighted with the new facility," Gay
remarked." It will serve us and the public
well."
